Welcome to ICUsteps - the support team for ex-ICU patients
Launch of ICUsteps @ the Royal London Hospital
The capital's first intensive care patient support group held their first drop-in event on Thursday 14th January 2010.
ICUsteps @ The London is a friendly, new support group where recovering intensive care patients, their friends and family members can meet with other people who've also been in ICU, share their experiences of intensive care and the road to recovery. The group is run by former patients, family and friends and refreshments will be available.
Intensive Care - a guide for patients and relatives reprinted
The second edition of 'Intensive Care - A guide for patients and relatives' was published in July 2009. The print run of 30,000 booklets paid for thanks to sponsorship from The Lee Spark NF Foundation.
By November this stock had been exhausted. Rather than wait for further funding to become available, leaving patients and relatives without the information they so desperately need in the meantime, ICUsteps decided to fund printing of a further 20,000 booklets.
Booklets from the reprint are now available. Although we need to pass on the cost of printing to recover our cost, boxes of 250 booklets are available for just £60 delivered. Less than 25p per booklet. Hospitals can place an order for booklets through our website.
The second edition has been updated to incorporate feedback from healthcare professionals and the 2009 NICE guideline on Critical Illness Rehabilitation. Produced by ICUsteps from the patient perspective in consultation with critical care professionals the second edition continues to be endorsed of the Department of Health.
Life after ICU - a study of the patient's perspective
Kate Deacon, a researcher with a background in intensive care nursing, is now undertaking a study that aims to make sure the things that matter most to patients are identified and concentrated on. This research aims to get the perspective of the ex-ICU patient by asking the question - 'What do you think is important?'
If you're an adult who has been a patient in Intensive Care, you can help with this study. If you're willing to share your experiences and perspective about recovering from critical illness please visit the study site.
